A twenty-something thirty-year-old Hawaii transplant living it up on the East Coast for the past 10 years (Boston and Stamford, CT). Holy crapolas
Okay so it’s totally bad form to be talking about huge quantities of money, right? But this is so ridiculous I just have to. And let me preface this with the fact that I am extremely lucky to have health insurance through new-new job so this actually is not what I’ll be paying.
First bill came in from my little appendix issue. This is just for the surgery - not the ER visit or the many different tests they ran or my hospital room. Just the 60 minute surgery. Any guesses? IRL I got guesses between $5K and $10K. Not even close.
Drumroll please…. $31,007.04. I read somewhere that a laparoscopic appendectomy is one of the most common surgeries that people have. So you know what I take that to mean? I take that to mean that while it was really sweet that my parents’ tagline in terms of education and profession was “we want you to be happy.” Screw that - I will expect nothing less from my future children than Preston Burke-grade surgeons.
